Best dressed

Oh Emma,

How do you always get it right? I bow down to your style-ness. Can we be besties? I promise I'm super fun.

XOXO,
Sydney

[PS - Sorry I never seem to be able to think of interesting post titles. There's more important things in life.]

Hey grandpa

Ok, so I'm kind of an old person living in a young person's body. For instance:

I promptly go to bed at 10 PM every night (slash fall asleep with the light on every night by 10 PM...)
I don't understand twitter (I may or may not call it the twitter)
I say such modern phrases as "slower than molasses on a cold day" and "doesn't blow my dress up darling" (or are those southern phrases?)
And I love me a good grandpa sweater...

So glad that the weather is finally cooling down so I can wear mine!

Jeans

I've been pretty devoted to skinny jeans for the past few years. Since I'm short, I feel like they flatter my figure best. Lately, however, I've been lusting after wide leg trousers. I know I'd have to wear some skyscraper wedges in order to balance out all that volume, but I want them, I need them.

I'll definitely be pairing a less expensive version of these jeans with these wedges and my new mustard-colored sweater once the temperature dips this fall.

Princess Bride

Ok seriously. These dresses are ridiculous. Ridiculously amazing. I think I need that maid of honor's dress in my life now. You know, just to wear around the house.

Denim on denim

Denim on denim has long been on fashion's no-no list, but over the past few years, the tides have been turning. Still hard to pull off, but when done right...it is so good.

#2

Last weekend, my mom and I headed over to LACMA to check out the Fashioning Fashion exhibit (#2 on my 24x24 list). It covers European fashion from 1700 to 1915. It was amazing to see how much variety there was in fashion during that time. The exhibit was much larger than I was expecting - it covered women's, men's and children's clothes, along with accessories of that time. Everything showcased was in pristine condition. The pictures online hardly do it justice. We walked through it twice, it was that good. If you're at all interested in costumery or fashion throughout history, I highly recommend it! It runs through March.

Sequin overload

Sequins

Lately, I've been finding myself lusting after anything shiny and sparkly. Totally impractical, but totally mesmerizing.

Fierceee

Now, I've watched every episode of Project Runway, and no one has stolen my heart quite like Christian Siriano. When I was first introduced to him in season 4, his crazy hair and even crazier catchphrases made him the personality standout. Little did I know he had the talent to back up the antics, going on to win that season. His biggest strength lies in his amazing, editorial dresses. And if he's good enough for Christina Hendricks...

Fall Outfits

fall outfits
Now that the weather has cooled, I've made the switch from my summer staples of shorts and t-shirts to my new fall uniform: slouchy sweaters, skinny pants and flats. Throw on and go.

I love to look at Marchesa collections, because they are always pure frothy fantasy.

Jennifer Aniston

This issue of Harper's has been killing it. In love with Jennifer Aniston's editorial, an homage to Barbra Steisrand.

Summer, summer, summertime

The weather in So Cal has been so pleasantly mild this summer....until now. Now, it seems like the weather is playing catch up. And it is hot hot HOT out there. We've been sizzling somewhere around the 100's all week. Whew! This is the part of summer that bugs me. While that weather is great if your plans involve a pool, some popsicles, or a nice nap in an air conditioned room....it's not conducive to actually getting real stuff done. Running to Target becomes a test of how fast you can sprint to the AC without getting sweat stains on your clothes. And nothing kills my creative fashion spirit faster than hot temps. I mean, one can only wear a tank top and shorts so many times before you're even making yourself yawn with style boredom. How do you handle the rise in temperature? Stick with simple styles? Or keep on rocking your fashion best, with just less layers?

J. Crew Fall

Ok, so by now you may know I have a special spot in my heart for J. Crew. Which is funny, because I don't own anything from there and never go into their store. It's pure fantasy. Their catalog is one of my favs to flip through (the others being, of course, Ikea and Anthro). Jenna Lyons kills it as creative director. I wish I had her job. So while I probably won't ever regularly shop there (I'm not made of money after all), a girl can dream. Or there's always Madewell.

An Education

Finally netflixed An Education. Loved it. (It doesn't hurt that it took place in two of my fav cities: London and Paris) Not only was it a great coming-of-age tale, but the styling was ah-mazing. 60's London? Ridic. Jenny, a young schoolgirl, meets an older man who introduces her to a whole different life. As they become more deeply involved, red flags keep popping up, but she's still swept up in the glamourous life he offers her. I won't ruin the end, just see it. The montage in Paris is particularly striking.

Um, do I need to tell you this a career path I'm seriously considering?

Crystal Renn

Just got done reading Hungry, the memoir by Crystal Renn. If you've never heard of her, or haven't picked up a magazine in the past few years, she's arguably of the most famous "plus-sized" models out there (and in my opinion, one of the most gorgeous models period). Her book talks about her start in the business, when she dropped 70 pounds to become a teenage model. The pictures from that time are pretty shocking. She looks completely different, you wouldn't be able to tell it was her just by looking at the picture. She struggled with modeling and almost quit, but it was only when she got over her eating disorder and became a normal weight that she really found success in the fashion industry. Now, she's blowing up! (Most recently seen on the June cover of Glamour). Definitely an interesting, eye-opening book and she writes in a relatable, down-to-earth way.
